Where it came from
Sakamoto desu ga?, authored by the late Nami Sano, debuted in the manga magazine Harta in 2012. The series emerged during a period when gag manga focusing on deadpan humor and absurdity were gaining significant traction. Sano created the titular character, Sakamoto, as an embodiment of unflappable perfection, intending for the comedy to stem from how his impossibly graceful and competent actions inadvertently disrupt the lives of those around him.
The design of the manga centers on Sano's sharp, high-contrast illustration style, which emphasizes Sakamoto’s cool, stoic demeanor against the chaotic reactions of his peers. Upon release, the series was received with widespread acclaim for its unique brand of stylish comedy, eventually winning the Comic Natalie Grand Prize. Its success led to a dedicated following and a 2016 anime adaptation, cementing its status as a notable entry in the school-life genre.
