Sakura Juuyuushi

Sakura Juuyuushi is a historical fantasy manga series authored by Rinko Ueda, originally serialized in the Japanese josei magazine You during the mid-2000s. The narrative serves as a reimagining of the classic legend of the Ten Braves of Sanada, a group of historical figures known for their loyalty to the daimyo Sanada Yukimura. Ueda crafted this series as part of a larger trend in Japanese media to modernize and gender-swap legendary figures, focusing on a protagonist who finds herself entangled in the political intrigue and romantic tensions of the Sengoku period.

The design and artistic approach reflect Ueda's signature shojo and josei style, characterized by fluid line work, elaborate period costumes, and expressive character designs that emphasize internal emotional states over tactical warfare. Upon its release, the series was received as a stylistic departure from traditional samurai fiction, appealing to readers who appreciated the synthesis of historical romanticism with character-driven drama. While it remains a niche title in the broader manga landscape, it is frequently cited by fans of Ueda's body of work as a representative example of her approach to historical character development.
