Sakura Wars, created by Ouji Hiroi and developed by Red Company and Sega, debuted in 1996 as a hybrid title that blended tactical role-playing with dating simulation mechanics. Set in a fictionalized version of the Taisho era, the series follows the Imperial Floral Assault Group, a secret military unit composed of performers who defend Tokyo from supernatural threats. The project was conceived to marry the high production values of 1990s anime with interactive storytelling, utilizing a distinctive system that rewarded players for managing character relationships during dialogue-heavy segments.

The series is widely recognized for its art style, largely shaped by character designer Kosuke Fujishima, whose work on the initial installments defined the visual identity of the franchise.
