San Francisco Blue Book and Pacific Coast Elite Directory; 1893-94

The San Francisco Blue Book and Pacific Coast Elite Directory served as a definitive social register during the late nineteenth century, documenting the city's influential families and households. Published annually, the 1893-94 edition was compiled during a period of significant urban development and wealth accumulation, intended to function as an essential reference for social correspondence and maintaining the hierarchies of the era's elite circles.

The directory followed the conventions of contemporary society registers, utilizing a structured format to list addresses, club memberships, and visiting days for prominent citizens. While the editorial staff remained anonymous as was common for such utilitarian social guides, the publication was widely circulated among the upper echelons of San Francisco society as a tool for navigating the intricate etiquette of the time. It remains a valuable primary source for historians researching the Gilded Age social landscape of the Pacific Coast.
