Where it came from
Sanda is a manga series written and illustrated by Itagaki Paru, serialized in Weekly Shōnen Champion beginning in 2021. The narrative follows Sanda Kazushige, a high school student who discovers his lineage is tied to a supernatural curse involving Santa Claus, exploring themes of maturity, adulthood, and the burden of tradition within a surreal, dark fantasy setting.
Following the critical and commercial success of her previous work, Beastars, Itagaki shifted toward a more experimental and allegorical tone with Sanda. The artwork features her signature sharp, expressive character designs and dynamic paneling, which were received by readers as a bold departure from typical shōnen tropes, further cementing her reputation for blending unconventional storytelling with deeply personal character introspection.
