Where it came from
Santa! was authored by Kurando Yukiaki and released during the early 1990s, emerging as a distinct entry in the seinen manga landscape. The series presents a irreverent and darkly comedic reimagining of Santa Claus, casting him as a rugged, hyper-masculine bounty hunter rather than the traditional benevolent figure of folklore. This subversion of holiday iconography was designed to appeal to readers looking for high-octane action mixed with satirical humor.
The character design and visual style are hallmark products of their era, utilizing the gritty, detailed aesthetic common to 90s action manga. By blending slapstick comedy with brutal combat sequences, Yukiaki sought to deconstruct the mythos of Saint Nicholas through a lens of gritty survivalism. While the series maintains a niche following today, it is primarily regarded as a stylistic curiosity that captures the specific, experimental tone of the manga industry during that decade.
