Where it came from
Sanzu no Kawa de Zarigani Tsuttemita, which translates to Fishing for Crawfish in the Sanzu River, is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Seta. The work emerged from the vibrant independent and digital manga landscape in Japan, finding its initial audience through online platforms before gaining a following for its unique fusion of surrealism and traditional folklore elements.
The narrative centers on the Sanzu River, the mythological boundary between the world of the living and the afterlife in Japanese Buddhism. Seta's artistic approach balances the somber, existential weight of this setting with the mundane, almost whimsical activity of fishing for crawfish. This juxtaposition was received by readers as a meditative, atmospheric exploration of life, death, and the persistence of childhood innocence in the face of the eternal.
