Sasuke

Sasuke, created by the renowned gekiga artist Shirato Sanpei, first debuted in 1959 within the pages of the manga magazine Shōnen. Set during the Keichō era, the narrative follows a young ninja who must navigate a volatile world of political intrigue, shinobi conflict, and personal tragedy following the Siege of Osaka. Sanpei’s work was instrumental in moving the ninja genre away from fantastical tropes toward a grittier, more grounded focus on survival and historical realism.

The series is celebrated for its precise linework and the thematic depth of its storytelling, which often explores social hierarchies and the harsh realities of the Edo period. Sanpei’s distinct aesthetic, characterized by dynamic action sequences and a somber, cinematic sensibility, solidified his status as a master of the gekiga style. The manga’s influence eventually led to a pioneering 1968 television anime adaptation, which remained faithful to the dark, introspective tone of the original source material.
