Where it came from
The s.CRY.ed series, credited to the collective pseudonym Yatate Hajime, originated as a 26-episode anime produced by Sunrise and directed by Goro Taniguchi, which premiered in 2001. Set in a post-apocalyptic Kanagawa Prefecture following a geological phenomenon known as the Great Uprising, the narrative explores a society divided between the 'native' inhabitants with supernatural Alter powers and the controlling organization known as HOLY. It was conceived during a period of high experimentation for the studio, blending elements of the superhero genre with intense character-driven rivalry.
The manga adaptation, illustrated by Yasunari Toda, was serialized in Akita Shoten's Champion RED magazine. The design of the series centers on the kinetic energy of the Alter abilities, reflecting a raw, punk-inspired aesthetic that defined the turn-of-the-millennium style in Japanese media. While the anime gained a dedicated cult following for its fluid animation and thematic exploration of individualism, the manga served to expand upon the psychological depth of the protagonists, Kazuma and Ryuho, solidifying its place as a notable entry in the late 90s and early 2000s action-adventure canon.
