Where it came from
The Second Button of March, or Sangatsu no Daini Botan, was created by the celebrated shojo manga artist Mizusawa Megumi. Originally serialized in the pages of Ribon magazine during the mid-1980s, the story captures the quintessential transition from adolescence to young adulthood. Megumi, known for her delicate line work and focus on school-life dynamics, aimed to illustrate the bittersweet anxieties of parting ways as students graduate and prepare for different life paths.
The title refers to a poignant Japanese cultural custom where a graduating student gives the second button of their school uniform jacket to someone they admire, as it is the button physically closest to the heart. Mizusawa utilized this tradition as a central emotional anchor for the narrative, exploring themes of hidden affection and the inevitability of change. The work was well-received by readers of the era for its gentle sincerity and remains a nostalgic staple of the classic shojo genre.
