Where it came from
Seirou Opera, written and illustrated by Sakurakouji Kanoko, began serialization in the shojo manga magazine Betsucomi in 2015. Set during the Edo period, the narrative follows Akane, a girl from a fallen samurai family who enters the Yoshiwara pleasure district disguised as an oiran to exact revenge for her father's death. The work is noted for its dramatic tension and the exploration of class disparities within the high-stakes environment of the red-light district.
Sakurakouji Kanoko is known for her meticulous attention to historical aesthetics and character-driven storytelling. In Seirou Opera, she balances the harsh realities of the Yoshiwara setting with a complex romantic dynamic, focusing on the developing relationship between Akane and the influential oiran Sosuke. The series was well-received by readers for its evocative art style and the subversion of traditional historical romance tropes, ultimately concluding its run in 2020.
