Senryuu Shoujo

Senryuu Shoujo, or Senryu Girl, began its serialization in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine in October 2016. Created by the mangaka Igarashi Masakuni, the series was conceived as a romantic comedy centered on Nanako Yukishiro, a high school student who communicates exclusively through senryu—a form of short, unrhymed Japanese poetry consisting of seventeen syllables. The manga grew out of a contemporary interest in quirky, dialogue-driven school comedies, focusing on the gentle chemistry between Nanako and her classmate Eiji Busujima, a former delinquent with a hidden interest in literature.

Igarashi Masakuni utilized a soft, minimalist art style to mirror the quiet and observant nature of the protagonist. By choosing the senryu format as the primary vehicle for dialogue, the series challenges traditional manga pacing, inviting readers to engage with the rhythm of the poetry alongside the character development. The work was well-received for its wholesome tone and refreshing lack of typical genre tropes, eventually leading to a twelve-episode anime adaptation produced by Connect in 2019, which helped broaden its international audience.
