Seraphita

Published in 1834, Seraphita stands as a singular achievement in Honoré de Balzac’s expansive La Comédie humaine. Written during a period of intense creative output, the work serves as the culmination of the author’s philosophical and mystical inquiries, functioning as a bridge between his realistic portraits of society and his exploration of Swedenborgian spiritualism. Balzac sought to render the ineffable through the story of a transcendental, androgynous being, pushing the boundaries of the 19th-century French novel to accommodate themes of reincarnation and divine love.

The narrative design was heavily influenced by Balzac’s interest in Emmanuel Swedenborg, whose theological writings provided the framework for the protagonist's ethereal nature.
