Where it came from
Set Theory and the Continuum Hypothesis, published in 1966, originated from a series of lectures Paul J. Cohen delivered at Harvard University. The text provides an accessible exposition of the independence proofs that earned Cohen the Fields Medal, detailing how he utilized the method of forcing to demonstrate that the continuum hypothesis and the axiom of choice are independent of Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory.
The book serves as a cornerstone for mathematical logic, transitioning complex abstract developments into a coherent pedagogical framework. It was designed to bridge the gap between foundational research and graduate-level study, reflecting Cohen’s objective to make the revolutionary shift in axiomatic set theory comprehensible to the broader mathematical community, where it remains a vital reference work today.
