Where it came from
Settai Mahjong-ka, authored by Shinkawa Hotate, emerged within the contemporary Japanese literary landscape as a nuanced exploration of the intersection between corporate culture and the intricate game of mahjong. Shinkawa, who is also a practicing lawyer, brought her professional background to the narrative, utilizing the high-stakes environment of the mahjong table to mirror the complex negotiations and social hierarchies found in the modern workplace.
The design and thematic execution of the work center on the concept of 'settai'—the practice of business entertainment—and how these rituals dictate social and professional standing. The series has been received as a clever subversion of traditional office tropes, praised for its sharp dialogue and the author's ability to infuse technical mahjong strategies with the psychological tension of corporate maneuvering.
