Shadow Lady

Shadow Lady was created by the acclaimed manga artist Masakazu Katsura and serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump between 1995 and 1996. The series explores the transformation of Aimi Komori, a timid girl who utilizes a magical lipstick to become the titular superheroine. Katsura, already celebrated for his detailed character work and mastery of anatomy, utilized this project to lean into his affinity for American superhero tropes, particularly the aesthetic and thematic motifs associated with the Batman franchise.

The character design reflects Katsura’s transition toward a more refined, polished style that defined his later career. Despite his significant reputation, the series had a relatively short run compared to his other major works, as it struggled to balance its darker, pulpy atmosphere with the traditional expectations of the Shonen Jump demographic. Nevertheless, it remains a notable entry in his bibliography, prized by collectors for its visual flair and its role as a precursor to the intricate stylistic choices seen in his later sci-fi hit, Zetman.
