Shigeru Mizuki Yokai Collection

The Shigeru Mizuki Yokai Collection originates from the life's work of Shigeru Mizuki, a pioneering manga artist who dedicated his career to archiving and illustrating the folklore of Japanese spirits known as yokai. Influenced by his childhood encounters with a local woman nicknamed Nonnonba, who shared tales of the supernatural, Mizuki began documenting these creatures in the mid-20th century to preserve disappearing traditional Japanese culture amidst rapid modernization.

The visual design of these volumes is characterized by Mizuki's distinct aesthetic, which often pairs intricately detailed, eerie depictions of yokai with more simplified, expressive character designs. These collections were assembled to serve as both an artistic showcase and an encyclopedic record of regional myths. Upon their release, they were widely recognized for elevating folklore into a central pillar of manga culture, eventually cementing Mizuki's reputation as a vital cultural historian who transformed how contemporary audiences perceive the invisible world.
