Where it came from
Shiki no Zenjitsu, or The Day Before Four Seasons, was authored by the mangaka Hozumi and originally serialized in the monthly magazine Monthly Flowers before being compiled into a standalone volume in 2012. It emerged during a period of rising interest in emotive, anthology-style manga that prioritized atmospheric storytelling and character-driven vignettes over long-form action narratives.
The work is noted for its delicate, fluid art style which Hozumi employed to capture the fleeting, bittersweet transitions between seasons and the personal growth of its characters. Upon release, the volume was well-regarded for its sensitivity and poetic pacing, eventually winning the Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōjo category, which solidified Hozumi’s reputation as a creator capable of profound emotional resonance.
