Shin Dokudoku Shinwa Taikei

Shin Dokudoku Shinwa Taikei, translating to New Poisonous Myth System, is a quintessential work from the prolific horror mangaka Hino Hideshi. Emerging from the mid-to-late 20th-century Japanese underground horror scene, this collection reflects Hino’s signature aesthetic: a grotesque, unsettling style that leans heavily into the macabre, social alienation, and the visceral nature of the human condition. It was created during a period when Hino was establishing himself as a master of the genre, utilizing stark, shaky line work and a uniquely disturbing visual language to evoke a sense of creeping unease rather than traditional jumpscares.

The thematic core of this collection focuses on the subversion of childhood innocence and the intrusion of the supernatural into everyday, mundane settings. Hino Hideshi, who drew significant inspiration from his own difficult childhood and experiences with postwar poverty, intended for these narratives to act as a mirror to the darker aspects of society. While his work was often viewed as fringe during its initial release, it eventually garnered a dedicated cult following, influencing generations of horror artists who recognized his ability to transform simple, often nightmarish concepts into profound reflections on loneliness and decay.
