Shin Tennis no Oujisama

Shin Tennis no Oujisama, or The New Prince of Tennis, debuted in Jump Square magazine in 2009 as a direct sequel to Takeshi Konomi’s immensely popular original series. Following the conclusion of the first run, Konomi returned to the story to chronicle Ryoma Echizen’s training at the U-17 selection camp, shifting the focus toward more intense, almost supernatural displays of tennis athleticism that had become the series' signature. The narrative serves to bridge the gap between regional high school competition and international professional play.

Konomi’s design philosophy for the sequel leaned into the increasingly stylized and heightened aesthetic that defined his later career, featuring detailed character portraits and complex, movement-heavy paneling during matches. While the series maintains the core cast that endeared the franchise to readers, it garnered attention for its shift in tone and the introduction of a new, highly competitive hierarchy.
