Shinigami-kun

Shinigami-kun, or 'Death God,' was created by mangaka Koichi Endo and serialized in Shueisha’s Fresh Jump magazine starting in 1983. The series centers on a whimsical yet poignant premise: a novice reaper tasked with escorting souls to the afterlife who often finds himself emotionally entangled in the lives of those he is assigned to collect. It emerged during an era of dark fantasy manga that explored mortality with a blend of satire and sentimentality.

Endo designed the titular character with a distinct visual contrast, balancing the grim nature of his duty with a bumbling, sympathetic personality that defied the typical terrifying depiction of death. The series became a cult classic for its episodic structure and philosophical underpinnings, eventually receiving a live-action television adaptation in 2014, which helped introduce the work to a new generation of readers who appreciated its enduring message about the value of human connection.
