Shinsengumi to Issho

Shinsengumi to Issho is a manga series created by the artist Ohba Kai, centered on a historical fiction premise that reimagines the members of the Shinsengumi—the famed special police force of the late Tokugawa shogunate—through a softer, character-focused lens. The work emerges from the long-standing Japanese cultural fascination with the Shinsengumi, a group often romanticized in media for their complex loyalties and tragic end during the Meiji Restoration.

Ohba Kai’s design choices for the series lean into stylized character aesthetics typical of the genre, prioritizing emotional expression and interpersonal dynamics over rigid historical accuracy. By stripping away the more violent realities of the Bakumatsu period, the series focuses on the daily lives and bonds between these historical figures. It was received as a niche entry in the historical manga canon, appealing primarily to readers who enjoy character-driven stories set against the backdrop of Japanese history.
