Shinyaku Seisho

The Shinyaku Seisho, or New Translation of the Holy Scriptures, represents a distinctive intersection of theological text and illustrative manga sensibilities. Created by Hidenori Kumai, this work emerged from a desire to make the narratives of the Bible more accessible to a contemporary Japanese audience through the visual language of sequential art. By distilling complex biblical passages into the stylistic framework of manga, the project sought to bridge the gap between traditional scripture and modern pop-culture aesthetics.

The design of the volume reflects a careful balance between reverence for the source material and the conventions of the medium. Kumai utilized character designs and pacing typical of late 20th-century manga to guide readers through canonical stories, aiming for an interpretation that was both faithful to the original text and visually engaging. While it occupies a niche space in religious publishing, it is recognized for its ambition to reach readers who might otherwise find traditional, text-heavy translations of the Bible impenetrable.
