Where it came from
Shiori Experience: Jimi na Watashi to Hen na Ojisan, created by mangaka duo Yuko Osada and Kazuya Machida, began serialization in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan in 2013. The series centers on Shiori Honda, a high school English teacher who feels she has lost her passion for life until she is unexpectedly haunted by the spirit of Jimi Hendrix. The narrative explores themes of musical legacy and personal redemption, using the surreal premise of a legendary rock icon mentoring a disillusioned adult to critique the stagnation that can come with modern societal expectations.
The art style is noted for its kinetic energy and dramatic visual metaphors that translate the feeling of rock music onto the page. By juxtaposing the mundane struggles of a teacher with the larger-than-life presence of Hendrix, the authors crafted a story that bridges generational gaps in musical history. The series has been praised by critics for its heartfelt character development and its ability to turn the history of blues and rock into a compelling, high-stakes narrative experience.
