Where it came from
Shokubutsu Zukan, or Botanical Encyclopedia, originated as a popular web novel by Hiro Arikawa before being published in print by Kadokawa Shoten in 2009. The story follows a young office worker who discovers an unconscious man outside her apartment, leading to a gentle, unconventional domestic partnership centered around foraging and cooking seasonal wild plants.
Arikawa is well-known for her light novels that blend romance with everyday realism, and in this work, she collaborated with illustrator Yoshii Dan. The design and presentation were intended to evoke a cozy, instructional aesthetic, reflecting the characters' shared hobby of botanical study. The book's gentle tone and unique focus on edible wild flora resonated strongly with readers, eventually leading to a successful manga adaptation and a 2016 feature film.
