Where it came from
Shoujotachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu, also known as Girls Beyond the Wasteland, originated as a visual novel developed by Minatosoft and released in 2016. The story follows a high school student named Buntaro Hojo who, feeling unfulfilled, is recruited by his enigmatic classmate Sayuki Kuroda to help produce a bishoujo game. The narrative serves as a meta-commentary on the anime and game development industry, exploring the collaborative creative process and the challenges of amateur production.
The intellectual property expanded into various media formats, including a manga adaptation and an anime series produced by Project No.9. The character designs were handled by Matsuryu, whose aesthetic focuses on expressive, youthful silhouettes characteristic of the genre. Upon its release, the series was received as a grounded, character-driven drama that resonated with audiences interested in the behind-the-scenes mechanics of Otaku culture and the personal growth of its young protagonists.
