Where it came from
Shounen Onmyouji is a light novel series authored by Yuuki Mitsuru, beginning serialization in late 2001 under Kadokawa Shoten's Beans Bunko imprint. The narrative follows Masahiro, the young, inexperienced grandson of the legendary Heian-period onmyoji Abe no Seimei, as he navigates his spiritual heritage and duties. The series emerged during a period of high popularity for supernatural-themed literature in Japan, effectively blending historical fiction with fantasy elements grounded in Japanese folklore and occult traditions.
The distinctive character designs and illustrations were provided by Asagi Sakura, whose aesthetic choices were central to the series' identity. Sakura’s intricate, delicate art style captured the ethereal, atmospheric quality of the Heian setting, helping the series gain a dedicated following that eventually supported a manga adaptation and a 2006 anime series by Studio Deen. Its success is often attributed to the combination of lighthearted character interactions and the emotional stakes of the protagonist's coming-of-age journey.
