Shuna's Journey

Shuna's Journey, or Shuna no Tabi, was published in 1983 as a standalone full-color manga written and illustrated by Hayao Miyazaki. Created during the period between the launch of his Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind manga and the establishment of Studio Ghibli, the work draws heavily from Tibetan folklore and serves as a proto-narrative for themes Miyazaki would later refine in his cinematic masterpieces. It remains a pivotal work in his bibliography, marking his experimentation with graphic storytelling that balanced dense, watercolor-infused illustration with a stark, mythic tone.

The narrative follows a prince named Shuna who travels to a distant, harsh land in search of a golden grain to save his dying kingdom. Miyazaki designed the work as a film-ready storyboard concept, though it was released as a printed volume rather than an animation project at the time.
