Where it came from
Shutterbox Book One, Orientation represents the return of the cult-favorite gothic fantasy series originally created by Rosearik Rikki Simons and Tavisha Wolfgarth-Simons in the late 1990s. The series occupies a unique space in the independent comics landscape, blending dark, surreal imagery with a narrative focused on the afterlife and the bureaucracy of souls. This specific volume serves as a reimagined, definitive edition of the early chapters, intended to reintroduce the world-building and character dynamics to both legacy fans and new readers.
The aesthetic of Shutterbox is defined by Simons' distinct, angular, and atmospheric illustration style, which heavily leans into gothic and expressionist influences. In this volume, the design choices emphasize a clean, modern layout that highlights the kinetic energy of the original black-and-white ink work. The release was met with appreciation from the independent graphic novel community for its commitment to preserving the creative vision of the original series while refining the production quality for contemporary readers.
