Where it came from
Sket Dance, authored by Kenta Shinohara, originated as a serialized manga in Weekly Shōnen Jump starting in 2007. The narrative follows the Sket Dan, a high school club dedicated to assisting students with any problems they may encounter. This specific official colored edition was developed to bring the vibrant aesthetic of the series' internal world to a wider digital or specialized print audience, emphasizing the character-driven comedy and emotional resonance that became the series' signature.
Shinohara, having served as an assistant for Hideaki Sorachi on Gintama, infused Sket Dance with a similar blend of absurdist humor and poignant storytelling. The design of these colored volumes maintains the clean, expressive lines characteristic of mid-2000s Shōnen manga, focusing on clarity and dynamic character interaction. Upon release, the series was well-regarded for its balance of gag-style humor and serious character-focused arcs, eventually earning the Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shōnen category in 2009.
