Where it came from
Soccer Girl Kaede is a sports-themed manga series created by Yoichi Takahashi, the acclaimed mangaka best known for his long-running international sensation, Captain Tsubasa. Published in the early 1990s, the work reflects Takahashi's career-long dedication to exploring the spirit of competitive soccer through the lens of shōnen-style character growth and dramatic match sequences.
The series focuses on the titular protagonist, Kaede, as she navigates the challenges of the sport and strives for excellence on the pitch. Takahashi's design philosophy here carries the kinetic, high-energy illustration style that defined his previous work, aiming to capture the intensity of movement and the emotional stakes of youth athletics. While it occupies a more specialized place in his bibliography compared to his global hits, it remains a consistent example of his signature approach to sports storytelling.
