Soko no Nai Machi

Soko no Nai Machi, or The Bottomless Town, was created by the legendary horror mangaka Kazuo Umezu and serialized in the early 1990s. Representing a mature phase in Umezu's storied career, the work serves as a surreal exploration of domestic anxiety and psychological fragmentation. Umezu, often referred to as the godfather of Japanese horror manga, utilized his signature grotesque imagery and disorienting panel layouts to critique the claustrophobia of modern urban life, forcing readers to question the stability of their own reality.

The narrative design reflects Umezu's long-standing fascination with the uncanny, employing high-contrast black-and-white art to heighten the sense of dread within its suburban setting. Upon its release, it was noted for its departure from traditional ghost-story tropes, favoring a hallucinatory, dream-like structure. It remains a hallmark of 1990s experimental horror, cited by critics for its influence on the aesthetic and thematic evolution of psychological horror in manga.
