Where it came from
Sommelière is a seinen manga series written by Joh Araki and illustrated by Katsuhiko Matsuura, serialized in Shueisha's Business Jump starting in 2005. The story follows Mei Itsuki, a young woman who returns to Japan from France to work as a sommelier after the death of her father. The narrative serves as an educational dive into the complex world of wine, blending technical oenological knowledge with character-driven drama set within the high-end dining culture of Tokyo.
The series is celebrated for its meticulous attention to detail regarding viticulture and the nuances of wine service, reflecting the burgeoning interest in wine appreciation in Japan during the mid-2000s. Its artistic direction by Matsuura captures the sensory experience of tasting through evocative visual metaphors, which helped the manga gain critical recognition, including an Excellence Award at the 2008 Japan Media Arts Festival for its grounded, sophisticated approach to its niche subject matter.
