Published in Japan during the early 1970s, this Spider-Man manga series was written by Hirai Kazumasa and illustrated by Ryoichi Ikegami. It emerged from a unique period of cultural exchange during which Marvel Comics sought to expand its international footprint, resulting in a localized reinterpretation of the character that leaned heavily into the darker, psychological sensibilities often found in Japanese gekiga storytelling of that era.

Kazumasa and Ikegami chose to move away from the lighthearted tone of the American source material, instead placing their version of Peter Parker in a grittier, more melancholic setting.
