Where it came from
The Splatoon manga series, serialized in CoroCoro Comic, emerged as a spin-off of Nintendo's popular third-person shooter franchise. Developed to expand the lore and character dynamics of the Inklings, the manga centers on a ragtag team of characters navigating the Turf War competitions of Inkopolis. The adaptation captures the high-energy, ink-splattered aesthetic of the games while introducing a more slapstick, episodic narrative structure tailored to the manga's younger target demographic.
The series is illustrated by Sankichi Hinodeya, who utilizes a vibrant and kinetic art style to translate the fluid movement of the game's mechanics onto the page. The design choices emphasize expressive character silhouettes and dynamic action sequences that mirror the frantic pace of digital competitive play. Upon its release, the manga was received positively by the franchise's fanbase for successfully capturing the playful, competitive spirit of the source material while serving as an accessible entry point into the world of Splatoon.
