Sportsman Kintaro: Academic Edition

Sportsman Kintaro: Academic Edition is a unique iteration within Terada Hiro’s broader Sportsman Kintaro series. Created as a fusion of the quintessential sports-manga spirit and a more pedagogical, academic focus, this volume was published to capitalize on the popularity of the protagonist's determined, 'never-give-up' attitude. It aims to translate the relentless training and perseverance found in the series into a classroom context, framing academic pursuits as a competitive sport that requires the same level of discipline and focus as an athletic event.

The design and narrative structure reflect Hiro's classic illustrative style, characterized by high-energy character expressions and dynamic panel layouts. By repositioning the hero in an environment centered on test scores and scholastic achievements, the publisher sought to appeal to students facing the pressures of Japan's rigorous education system. While it maintains the aesthetic hallmarks of the original series, the volume received a distinct reception, praised by some for its encouraging message while viewed by others as a creative experiment that diverges from the pure, sweat-drenched action of its predecessors.
