Where it came from
Spy Classroom, written by Takemachi and illustrated by Tomari, began as a light novel series published by Fujimi Fantasia Bunko in early 2020. The narrative emerged from the thriving genre of tactical light novels, focusing on a group of young, eccentric spies in a post-war world defined by shadow warfare. Takemachi sought to craft a blend of high-stakes espionage and character-driven comedy, placing seven girls with various shortcomings under the tutelage of the master spy Klaus.
Tomari's character designs were central to the series' identity, employing a clean, vibrant aesthetic that helped the work stand out within the competitive light novel market. The series received significant attention for its plot twists and character development, leading to a manga adaptation and a subsequent anime production by studio feel. It is widely recognized for subverting traditional spy tropes by focusing on the 'impossible mission' concept through the lens of unconventional teamwork.
