SS

SS, written and illustrated by Harumoto Shohei, emerged from the subculture of 1980s Japanese motorcycle enthusiast manga. It was serialized during a period when the 'bosozoku' lifestyle and street racing culture heavily influenced youth media in Japan. Harumoto utilized his own deep knowledge of mechanics and the visceral, high-speed thrill of street riding to create a narrative that resonated with a generation fascinated by customization and the technical nuances of racing machines.

The design of the series is noted for its gritty, hyper-realistic depiction of motorcycles and the technical detail surrounding engine modifications. Harumoto's art style prioritizes the kinetic energy of the bikes themselves, often capturing a sense of speed and mechanical intimacy that distinguishes his work from more stylized action manga of the era. Upon its release, it was received as a quintessential piece of 'motorcycle manga,' valued by hobbyists for its accuracy and its authentic portrayal of the lifestyle surrounding the sport.
