Stand und Herkunst der Bischofe der Magdeburger und Hamburger Kirchenprovinzen im Mittelalter

This scholarly volume, authored by Gerhard Müller-Alpermann, serves as a prosopographical study of the medieval ecclesiastical hierarchy within the church provinces of Magdeburg and Hamburg-Bremen. Published in the mid-20th century, the work was conceived to provide a rigorous genealogical and social analysis of the bishops who governed these influential territories, bridging a gap in the understanding of how regional noble lineages occupied high-ranking positions in the Church.

Müller-Alpermann’s methodology reflects the rigorous traditions of German historical research, prioritizing archival documentation and critical source analysis. By mapping the backgrounds and origins of these church leaders, the book offers insight into the intersection of aristocratic power structures and ecclesiastical governance during the Middle Ages, making it a specialized reference for medievalists and historians studying the sociopolitical landscape of northern and eastern Germany.
