Where it came from
Published in 1997 by Del Rey, Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays was released to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of the original film and the theatrical launch of the Special Editions. Author Laurent Bouzereau, a noted film historian and documentarian, was granted unprecedented access to George Lucas's personal archives and the Lucasfilm library to compile this volume, which serves as a definitive look at the evolution of the original trilogy's narrative.
The book design focuses on scholarly analysis, presenting the shooting scripts alongside side-bar commentary that details deleted scenes, character development shifts, and the technical challenges of the production. Bouzereau’s goal was to provide a transparent look at the iterative process of screenwriting, highlighting how the stories transformed from early drafts into the final cinematic releases. It remains a foundational reference for fans and film students interested in the franchise's creative history.
