Stefan George: Gedichte für dich

Published in 2011, this volume offers a modern scholarly perspective on the work of Stefan George, one of the most influential and controversial figures in early twentieth-century German poetry. Compiled and edited by Christophe Fricker, the book serves as a curated selection of George’s verse, specifically framed to explore the intimate and often enigmatic nature of his lyricism, which frequently centered on themes of aesthetic devotion, myth-making, and the idealization of the beloved.

Fricker’s approach to the collection reflects contemporary academic efforts to decouple George’s literary contributions from the ideological baggage later imposed upon his work by the George-Kreis and the shifting political landscape of his era. By focusing on the 'Gedichte für dich' aspect, the volume highlights the intensely personal and often private communicative function of George’s poetry, presenting a text intended for the reader to engage with on an individual, rather than communal or political, level.
