Straight to Judo, created by the influential writer Kajiwara Ikki, emerged during the late 1960s, a period when the Japanese manga industry was rapidly diversifying into intense, character-driven sports dramas. Kajiwara, known for his work on iconic titles like Ashita no Joe and Tiger Mask, utilized this series to explore the grueling discipline and internal philosophy of judo practitioners. The narrative served as a reflection of the postwar Japanese spirit, emphasizing perseverance, self-improvement, and the transition of traditional martial arts into modern competitive sport.

The design and illustration of the series follow the stylistic conventions of the era's gekiga movement, which prioritized dramatic, expressive line work and intense character reactions to emphasize the psychological stakes of competition. The artwork sought to capture the visceral energy of a judo match, focusing on the kinetic tension between opponents. While it may not have achieved the same global ubiquity as some of Kajiwara’s other projects, it remains a notable example of his dedication to the 'spokon'—or sports spirit—genre, which solidified his legacy as a titan of narrative sports manga.
