Studies in Chaucer: His Life and Writings

Published in 1892, Studies in Chaucer: His Life and Writings represents Thomas R. Lounsbury's extensive contribution to late-nineteenth-century literary criticism. Lounsbury, a professor at Yale University, undertook this comprehensive three-volume work during a period when Chaucerian studies were transitioning into a more rigorous academic discipline. The set was designed to consolidate existing biographical knowledge while applying a critical lens to the authenticity of the Chaucerian canon, aiming to distinguish the poet's genuine works from those erroneously attributed to him.

Lounsbury’s approach was noted for its meticulous historical research and its departure from the purely appreciative literary commentary that preceded it. By analyzing linguistic patterns and historical context, he sought to bring a scientific level of inquiry to the study of Middle English poetry. The work was generally well-received by his contemporaries for its scholarly depth, establishing a foundational reference point for subsequent generations of Chaucerian scholars and remaining a significant example of Victorian-era academic publishing.
