Where it came from
Synesthesia is a manga series authored by Asa Kasumi, emerging from a period of experimental storytelling in contemporary Japanese comics. The work was created to explore themes of sensory overlap, utilizing the unique visual language of the medium to represent intangible psychological states. Kasumi developed the series to push the boundaries of how narrative can translate non-linear, multi-sensory experiences into a static, printed format.
The design of the volume reflects Kasumi’s focus on minimalist aesthetic choices, often prioritizing stark panel layouts and high-contrast ink work to mirror the intensity of the characters' internal perceptions. The series received critical notice for its departure from traditional genre tropes, finding its audience among readers who appreciate abstract narratives and unconventional character studies. While it remains a niche title, it is frequently cited by collectors for its distinctive approach to visual storytelling.
