Tales of Agriculture

Tales of Agriculture, known in Japan as Moyasimon, began serialization in 2004 within the pages of Evening magazine. Written and illustrated by Ishikawa Masayuki, the series was conceived as a unique educational comedy centered on the life of Tadayasu Sawaki, an agricultural university student with the rare ability to perceive and communicate with microorganisms. The work was born from a desire to humanize the invisible world of biology, blending meticulous scientific research with a whimsical, character-driven narrative.

The design and visual style of the manga are noted for their anthropomorphized depictions of bacteria, such as the iconic A. oryzae, which became a cultural touchstone in Japan. Ishikawa Masayuki’s approach was to balance technical accuracy regarding fermentation and agricultural science with a lighthearted, absurdist tone. Upon its release, the series received critical acclaim for its innovative subject matter and won several prestigious honors, including the 2008 Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and the 32nd Kodansha Manga Award, solidifying its status as a staple of the seinen demographic.
