Where it came from
Tengen Eiyuu Taisen, written and illustrated by Hiromoto Yasu, began serialization in the Japanese manga magazine Monthly Comic Zenon in 2021. The series functions as a grand-scale historical fantasy, emerging from a popular subgenre of battle manga that brings together legendary figures from disparate eras and cultures to fight in a tournament-style setting. It reflects a contemporary trend in seinen manga that emphasizes high-stakes combat choreography paired with imaginative reinterpretations of historical icons like Oda Nobunaga and Joan of Arc.
Hiromoto Yasu brought a distinct, visceral artistic style to the project, characterized by dynamic paneling and gritty character designs that prioritize kinetic energy over historical accuracy. The series was developed as a high-concept action title intended to appeal to fans of supernatural historical dramas, focusing on the tactical and character-driven clashes between historical legends. Critics have noted its lean into absurdity and spectacle, situating it as a stylistically bold entry within the long tradition of cross-historical battle narratives.
