Tengoku Daimakyou

Tengoku Daimakyou, known in English as Heavenly Delusion, began serialization in Kodansha's Afternoon magazine in 2018. Written and illustrated by Masakazu Ishiguro, the series emerged during a period of renewed interest in post-apocalyptic settings within the seinen manga demographic. Ishiguro, previously acclaimed for his work on Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru, crafted this narrative to explore the jarring duality between a walled, idyllic garden facility and the desolate, monster-ridden wasteland of the outside world.

The design of the manga reflects Ishiguro’s precise visual storytelling, utilizing clean, expressive line work to contrast the innocence of the children in the facility with the gritty, survivalist aesthetic of the protagonists Maru and Kiruko. Upon its release, the series was praised for its intricate mystery-building and unconventional pacing. It consistently appeared on prestigious industry lists, such as Kono Manga ga Sugoi!, and eventually received a high-profile anime adaptation that brought further critical attention to its complex world-building.
