Tenki no Ko

Tenki no Ko, known internationally as Weathering with You, was written and directed by Makoto Shinkai and released in 2019 as a direct follow-up to his global success, Your Name. The narrative was conceived to capture the anxieties of a younger generation living in a climate-altered world, centering on the relationship between a runaway teenager and a girl who can manipulate the weather. Shinkai sought to create a visual experience that pushed the limits of traditional animation, focusing on the hyper-realistic representation of light, rain, and the shifting urban landscape of Tokyo.

The production was managed by CoMix Wave Films, a studio long associated with Shinkai’s signature aesthetic of rich, atmospheric color palettes and intricate background detail. Upon its release, the film was met with significant critical acclaim for its technical artistry and emotional resonance, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film of 2019. It remains a hallmark of contemporary anime, noted for the collaborative influence of RADWIMPS on the score and the nuanced character designs provided by Masayoshi Tanaka, which successfully bridge the gap between realism and emotive, expressive character acting.
