Where it came from
Tenshi ja Nai!! was serialized in the Japanese shōjo manga magazine Margaret beginning in the mid-1990s. Authored and illustrated by Shigematsu Takako, the series emerged during a period of high popularity for school-life romance manga, focusing on the dynamic between a high-school student and her mysterious, angelic classmate. It reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of 90s shōjo, emphasizing expressive character designs and themes of adolescent discovery.
Shigematsu Takako utilized a clean, polished art style that aligned with the mainstream expectations of the Margaret readership at the time. The narrative structure follows typical shōjo tropes, blending supernatural elements with mundane school drama. While it remains a recognized title within the Shigematsu bibliography, it is primarily regarded as a representative example of the era's light-hearted romance genre rather than a revolutionary departure from existing conventions.
