Where it came from
Teppuu, authored by Ohta Moare, began serialization in Kodansha's Afternoon magazine in 2008. The series centers on Natsuo Ishido, a gifted but cynical high school student who is scouted for her school's mixed martial arts club. It stands out in the sports manga genre for its deconstruction of the traditional protagonist archetype, focusing on a lead character who is driven by an intense desire to see others fail rather than a virtuous pursuit of victory.
Ohta Moare's artistic approach emphasizes fluid, kinetic action sequences that grounded the series in a gritty realism rarely seen in combat manga of its time. The character design prioritizes anatomical accuracy and expressions that convey internal turmoil, which helped the manga earn critical praise for its psychological depth. Though it concluded with a limited number of volumes, it remains a respected cult classic among martial arts enthusiasts for its unique perspective on competitive drive and athlete burnout.
